Little Computational Thinkers
In this world where technology is constantly evolving, we want our next generation to be well prepared for their future. Many are eager to equip the young with coding knowledge at a young age.
As Kristen Thorson (Getting Smart, 2018) puts it, coding is the application of learning. Before students learn how to code, they need to understand the concepts behind that application – through Computational Thinking.
In collaboration with Kids & Kins Child Care Centre, we conducted a weekly Computational Thinking Skills (CTS) workshop for preschool students. Our little computational thinkers learnt how to decompose problems, find patterns in them, abstract out unimportant details and form step-by-step instructions to solve a problem, through thematic activities and games.
In the first 4 lessons of CTS, our little computational thinkers learnt how to create their Dream Vehicle using a mind map, guess the program by identifying patterns in actions, park the vehicles using ScratchJr blocks, and created their own program to solve a maze game.
Through this workshop, our little computational thinkers learnt how to think logically, form sequences and correct errors in their program (debugging). We are heartened to see them enjoying the activities and learning through purposeful play.

Computational Thinking Skills workshop focuses on unplugged screen-free activities to inculcate computational thinking skills to children aged 4-6 years old. These invaluable skills are aimed to prepare them to become self-directed learners of the 21st century.
